i always wondered what the cause/force of tornadoes, hurricanes, solar systems, and galaxies all swirling. I guess it is this. The question I have is what are the galaxies rotating around to produce their swirl?

Yes, it arises when an object is moving relative to a rotating(hence, non inertial) reference frame. It is not only a geometric property.

A nice primer on the Coriolis effect, which has application in the area of fluid handling when considering Coriolis flowmetering technology.

Ah, Penny Tranter. Maybe if I wasn't already thinking about Laura Tobin, perhaps...

Aha! After a little more searching, I realize that the unexpected turn to the right as the air heads north is due to inertia.

Wait...why can't you just do a demonstration on a globe with a marker if the coriolis effect is only a geometric property?
It must not be merely caused by geometric rotation. It must also be caused by rotational forces? Right? That's why he had to use a marble and a pan lid.

The woman at the beginning made my parents think I was watching something....... naughty.
Ive wondered what the coriolis effect is since I sniped Zakhaev in call of duty.

People here are saying they understood it quite easily - that doesn't mean it's not hard, it means they did a good job of explaining it well. I'm sure that to get a deep understanding of the phenomenon, as the interviewees had, would take a lot more work.
Thanks for the interesting video.
