Tito Curet Alonso wrote LA GRAN TIRANA, which was a big hit. Here we haveLA LUPE singing that hit. Her real name is Guadalupe Victoria Yoli Raymond who was born in December 23, 1939 in Santiago, Cuba. She died February 29 1992 in the Bronx, New York City of a heart attack. Tito Puente crowned her as LA REINA DE LA CANCION LATINA, but, she wanted to be called LA YIYIYI. At the beginning she started performing in La Havana, Cuba before the revolution, but, didn't gain wide acceptance because of her crazy performance. She was very energetic in her performance which usually ended taking some of her clothes off. She was branded anti-revolutionary and have to leave Cuba. When she came to New York Mongo Santamaria helped her to get into the music scene. Both teamed up with to make the album make "Mongo Introduces La Lupe" in 1963. Then she joined the band of Tito Puente. La Lupe went on to become one of the top two divas of salsa music (the other was Celia Cruz). In the 1970's La Lupe saw her career decline somewhat. First she was banned from television from Puerto Rico after she tore her clothes off during an awards ceremony on national television. In the 1980's, La Lupe, who retired from the industry, saw herself destitute. Her husband's medical bills, her large donations to the African-based religion of "Santeria", and her personal problems often left her and her family homeless. She became paralyzed following a domestic accident and was healed by an evangelical preacher. After this, she converted to evangelicalism and recorded Christian orientated material in the late 80s. She continued her devotion to evangelism until her death in 1992.
