Dick Button and Bud Palmer at the closing of the 1961 US National Championships, discussing how they went. This is really kind of heartbreaking when you take into account Dick's enthusiasm for the future, and the fact that not even a month later, the entire US Figure Skating World Team was killed when their plane crashed en route to the World Championships.

  • @jmburry The toupee' helps!

  • @altfactor I read recently that Jim McKay was supposed to be the main host of the Winter Games in Squaw Valley but had a mental breakdown so Walter Cronkite took over.Jim later switched to ABC and history was born.

  • Bud Palmer is a smoothie! He does the presentation of the 1961 Monaco GP ...

A great, plainly a gentleman of considerable stature.

The world needs more Bud Palmers.

  • Dick talks about hoping to keep up the good US showing, and then later on they had that crash that would kill all of that strong skating talent, and we wouldn't rebound until 1966 when Peggy Fleming would come on the scene.

  • I think this aired on CBS.

ABC's "Wide World Of Sports", which for over three decades had a "lock" on major figure-skating events, didn't premiere until April of 1961.

It's my understanding Dick Button's first broadcast as a skating analyst was at the 1960 Squaw Valley Winter Olympics for CBS.

It's my understanding he'll be one of NBC's skating commentors at Vancouver in 2010, which will give him fifty years as a newtork sports analyst.

That's got to be a record.

  • Dick Button was a handsome guy back then! Where did you find this TV coverage?
