CUP THE PALM OF YOUR HAND OVER THEIR NOSE - it works same as having a human breath into a paperbag when they are hyperventilating. Have been using this technique for 5 yrs on my 3 Boston Terriers...and it stops within secs without fail. The rubbing throat thing does nothing - only adds to dogs panic...the more you try to soothe them, the more they think something is wrong.

I do the same thing with my morkies when it happens to them except I hold the top of their nose so they can open their mouths. It really does help. :)
How to tell if the dog can't breathe?

@TheTremor209 Good question. I don't know. I am not a vet. :( Anyone? Anyone have the answer?

My dog does this too once in a while. One day, a couple years ago, it started happening every few minutes, so we had to take her to the vet and he gave her antibiotics for it. I don't know if that was stopped it but fortunately it did stop. It was very scary.

@furtherbeyond it is VERY scary, especially if you never heard about it and that it is harmless.

I am a vet, and I have mini Dachshunds that do this; it's called reverse sneezing (NOT a collapsing trachea, which is much more serious). Please do not administer anything by mouth as they may aspirate into their lungs (some suggestions on here to give honey, etc.). I simply rub their throats gently as the swallowing motion interrupts the reverse sneeze and doesn't interfere with air flow. It is hard for owners to watch as dogs look a little panicky.
