Guru ji's bani says: Na hum hindu, na musalmaan. Allah ram ke pind praan. It means that nobody is a hindu or a muslim. We all have come from Allah and Ram (both allude to the one and only true God).
So Guru ji did not belong to one religion and not the other, he only belonged to the Name of God.
By segregating any one person into a religion, you are missing the bigger point of what religion teaches: In front of God, we are all equals. No one person is greater or lesser because of religion.
