Here we want to present some impressions of the first european sword fullcontact tournament from the Traditional Chineses Sword League. It was organized by the "jianfa.nl" as part of the Odampt Tai Chi Festival in Odampt, Netherlands.

Most swordsmen and -women came from the Tai Chi, a few from some Kung Fu style/directions. There was fair play all the time and the head referee Laoshi Scott Rodell as well as the judges did a very good, excact job. Good atmosphere, nice people and interessting "sword-maniacs" and exchange from different jian styles.

Dispite of the different qualifactions /skills of the swordsmen... - consider its no "designed"/choreographed swordplay like nice wushu lightwight swordforms, etc ... These are 600-850g wooden jians plus body armor. Please consider this, before leaving a statement here -- which is by the way welcome. ;-)

Thank you to the guys from the Jianfa organisation and Laoshi Scott Rodell for the nice day!

See you guys next year. ;-)

  • they should throw away that stick and freak armor and use flimsy blades similar to the sabre or epee blades equipped with electric scoring system. use fencing helmets that have protection to strikes against the back of the head. have them use lames that covers their neck and down to their thighs. use wireless scoring system....uh..jianshu anyone? unfortunately the jianshu league cant or probably never thought of doing this. well thats a suggestion.

  • @ShuyuKoukin

It´s not their idea and concept - using electric scoring system and or epee blades! What you are talking about is sports not arts... In their jianshu style, they want to make it close to a "authentic swordplay" - and that is of course different to other jianshu styles...

    greetz

    frank :-)

  • @wudangjian what "authentic swordplay"? name one form that they actually applied in those bouts. just because you try to make your cuts and thrusts look kung fu-ish it doesnt mean that it will be called authentic chinese swordplay. you can fool the layman but not people with experiences. true, western fencing is definitely a sport but it's also a solid no-nonsense defense system. we have PROPER parries, riposte, transports, etc that are being perfected everytime we stand on the strip.

  • @ShuyuKoukin

hey dude, you have to ask / to talk to the guys from the sword league not me. ;-)

I understand what you are trying to say ... but its pretty easy at least: it´s the skill of the practioner/fighter and not the style or the techniques...

and once again - it makes a difference if only some techniques and aim zones are allowed (sports) or you can do everything anywhere (arts) at the fight. and that takes at least a big effort to learn and to apply .... ;-)

  • can someone explain to me why they are fighting with one hand since they are not holding shield or another weapon?

  • @loveryoda

because that´s the way they fight. ;-)

  • @loveryoda they're using a one handed weapon. There isn't a lot of room for another hand to hold it. Two handed Jian (Straight swords) exist, but not many people use them for some reason. It's not exactly against the rules or anything.

As for the shield, well, the rules only allow one "ne" sword and nothing else.

  • @wudangjian yeah i agree. the style never makes the user good its the user that makes the style good. i practice the chen taijijian and i apply many of the forms in fencing. which is why i find it awkward that these people who huddled under one banner labeled "jianshu" consider themselves as a jianshu practitioner. unlike me they dont use any jianshu. so do you think it makes sense for them to consider themselves as a chinese sword stylist? lol

  • @jwul28 thats how people in this "league" do it. they always use the excuse as..this is real fighting or..its not choreographed. dood i practice taijijian and taijidao and i was able to use many applications in my sabre bouts. sabre fencing is way faster than this, idk why these people cant pull it off. my applications arent godly like the ones in chinese movies nor gracious..but those applications that i pulled off represents "Jianshu". this represents nothing. no offense guys.

  • @jwul28

i know exacly what you mean! there where 5 referees who tried to judge fair as possible.

it was pretty hard to judge who hit first and which hit was the more effective one....

the question is when to make a breake while fighting and hiting....

less regulate means martial arts! i like the traditional kung fu with its weaapons and sword-styles. ;-)

    we do meihua tang lang.
