I played the hell outta this back in the day, on my then brand new 3DO. If anyone give a crap, I have the whole soundtrack on mp3, at 320/bps...even the goofy spooky dude "cutscenes" where he talks to you between levels.

You were supposed to collect the scattered pieces of a broken talisman that was supposed to hold the gates of hell together, or something like that. The talisman was scattered in twelve pieces, thus, the twelve stages.

I remember this game clear as day. Looking at it now, I still am fascinated by how utterly bizarre the whole thing is. This IS supposed to be a manor, however level sizes would force you to think otherwise. As an architect, I love to look at games' playing space, and in this case, it is so fucking bizarre.
