As noted, the audio quality doesn't do justice to the brilliant vocals of Peter Gabriel. This song closed out the soundtrack for "Shall We Dance". The music continued well after the vocals were done. It was so good it gave me the chills.

shame for the poor audio quality

this is beautiful, but it is not the true spirit of the song

Usually, I say 'lovely'. But this is absolutely GORGEOUS! The best romantic song, EVER!

may we agree that PG did a lovely version, and enjoy?

@senatorgreenday With all acknowledgement of Stephin Merritt's creative genius, Peter Gabriel elevates this song. As an artist with 3 decades of history behind him, to even select this song is a tribute to Merritt's artistry. But Gabriel is without question the superior vocalist and this arrangement has far greater emotional impact than the original.
Stephin Merritt is to be commended for creating such a brilliant poem. Peter Gabriel is an enormous compliment of a successor.

@caveatemptor27: Well said. While I respect both artists and enjoy both versions for completely different reasons, it has to be said that PG's rendition is immeasurably better than the original.
