The war caused wide spread shortages, but fashion remained important. By day hair was kept out of sight in a turban or knitted snood which stopped it getting caught in machinery but generally hair still had some length.
The Veronica Lake Hollywood star, hairstyle was very popular as was peroxide bleached hair. Glamorous styles with curls were preferred to the short styles of the twenties. Some factories even installed hair salons to improve women's long term attendance. During this era Princess Elizabeth popularised the wearing of a headscarf tied under the chin.

The main reason Veronica Lake was appealing was that she embodied the American ideal. Since we've been indoctrinated by government union controlled public school to diminish the American ideal and embrace foreign attitudes as to what's beautiful we've lost the standard that American women set. And that was by design, I might add.
