October 13, 2011 UPDATE: Berkeley Bionics has rebranded. The company is now known as Ekso Bionics and eLEGS has become Ekso. To clarify, the device is an exoskeleton and the brand of the exoskeleton is Ekso, by Ekso Bionics.

On Oct. 7, 2010, we unveiled the eLEGS Professional device, an exoskeleton for paraplegics or individuals with lower-extremity weakness who are committed to living life to its fullest. It powers you up to get you standing and walking. http://berkeleybionics.com

The eLEGS Professional exoskeleton will be distributed to leading rehabilitation centers in the United States by January 2012. Berkeley Bionics plans to make the eLEGS Personal exoskeleton available for use in the home during 2013.

eLEGS Professional device will undergo investigational studies at ten of the top rehabilitation centers in the United States. The studies will entail reciprocal information sharing and learning, including defining clinical protocols. Each eLEGS Center will conduct ongoing research while offering the device for the rehabilitation of their patients.

@risadora Thank you for your comment. At the moment, eLEGS Pro is not available for children. It can accommodate a person who is 5'2" - 6'2" tall. We envision a future where eLEGS will be available for all sizes, including children. Please be sure to visit our website and complete our contact form so we can keep you updated with information. Thank you. Power UP!

@mangalamata My name is Amanda Boxtel and I am an eLEGS ambassador for Berkeley Bionics. I walk in eLEGS regularly. In response to your question, I believe that Berkeley Bionics does envision an exoskeleton in the future that will accommodate quadriplegics, however they are taking critical steps with their first medical device, the eLEGS Pro. Berkeley Bionics is conducting investigational trials with the eLEGS Pro device in rehabilitation centers across the US. I hope this helps.

Mere words cannot express how I feel about the benefits that this kind of technology can bring to mankind ! I have nothing but admiration for people who are doing this work. Let's keep the cost down. Right !

As long as it's always available to the general public and not just the military.

My dad and family are traveling to California this weekend to test this thing out! He is a T-5 paraplegic since 2001. In the past year he has regained strength and even some return in his legs by swimming and standing in his standing-frame. We hope e-Legs will help his muscles 'remember' how to walk again as he continues to gain strength.

In fact if the people using it didn't have to concentrate on not falling over perhaps they would be more confident with it and not need the sticks to keep them upright.

Brilliant system though looking forward to see what comes next with it, been watching the military one for some time now it's all very interesting.

I'm just wondering why this system doesn't use a self balancing unit to stabilise it, if you look at the c1 electric motorcycle being tested now, they use gyro mechanisms to balance the vehicle, or even the Segway uses a stabilising system, but this seems to rely on human stability with people that seem to have lost that ability.

So by using a stabilising system like the c1 electric bike or Segway it may make the device more user friendly and mobile.

Good for 'younger with muscle memory'? To be honest, that’s disappointing to me. My grandpa needs to walk again. At 16, his legs got weaker, until he could barely move his toes. He suffers from ‘Muscular Dystrophy’, a muscle disease that weakens the musculoskeletal system. He is 63 now. He used to be able to walk a bit, but he fell & smashed his pelvis. Can’t it be able to accommodate grandpa? He’s old, & can’t remember walking. Will it work for him, or is it simply for the younger?
