The basic idea of drawing facial expressions is to play with the shapes and positions of the eyebrows, eyes (including eyelids) and the mouth. By varying how these features look, you can come up with different expressions. In this video, I draw a handful of expressions and show you the basics of coming up with your own. Enjoy!

  • i like those ... how do you draw that good .... what kind of pencil do you use...

  • thanks, I use a "Tombo". If you live in LA, you can find it at a store called "Swain's" in Glendale. But any pencil will do-- just find one with the hardness you like. 2B is softer and draws darker, HB is harder and will draw lighter. I tend to like a 2B pencil.

  • none taken man, it's all about getting help from as many people as possible. I'll check the nose :) definitely will post more vids too-- I have to wait until I get new editing software... hopefully soon!

  • nice, but i think you could make the nose less angular and smaller so the pics look more balanced, and for the happy face opening the mouth to a triangle shape have a better effect i think

  • cool, thx Cryer! I appreciate the critique. I'll have to give a triangle mouth a shot-- don't think I've ever tried doing that before.

  • Cool! :D I hope to do tutorials soon.... if I ever get a new camera... (TTATT)

  • a pretty decent tutorial, its good but how you said take note of muscles, the eyes are pretty much exactly the same with every face, the eyebrows are different but the eyes are the same lol, i know its rushed but maybe try such as yelling making the pupil very small and the nose more flared out. its still pretty good well done

  • i love it! :D

  • Not trying to be mean or nothin but really happy looks really tired but good Job :)

  • I like your hand writing...

  • wow, i really like the fact that u draw in the eye sockets as guidelines, thats a really smart/good idea!

like the cryer3160 said, i agree. u (i dont know if u've done more since then, most likely right?) can get even more expressions by using triangles for the mouths, and by combining different expressions to make new even awesomer ones! >,<

btw, do u have a deviantart account? if u do i'd like to check it out ^^

  • OMFG! NICE JOB! I REALLY GOT SUM IDEAS!

  • fail.....

  • Nice tutorial, I like your videos.
