ZHANG:
A surprising move by Russia's Supreme Court. The last Tsar will now be recognized as a victim of Soviet repression. The Tsar, his wife and five children were killed by a Bolshevik revolutionary firing squad ninety years ago.

STORY:
It was a legal anomaly monarchists in Russia have long condemned. Tsar Nicholas II, his wife and five children were executed by a Bolsehvik firing squad in 1918.

But unlike tens of millions of other Russians they've never been recognized as victims of Soviet repression - until now.

Pavlov Odintsov is a spokesman for Russia's Supreme Court.

[Pavlov Odintsov, Supreme Court Spokesman]:
"The Supreme Court, the supreme judicial institution of the Russian Federation, has ruled that the former Emperor of the Russian Empire, Nikolai Alexandrovich Romanov and his family be recognised as groundlessly repressed and that they are to be rehabilitated."

It's a symbolic victory for monarchists. They believe it will help draw a line under Russia's blood-stained past.

A descendant of the family has apparently welcomed the news. She spoke to the head of the Chancellery of Russia's self-styled Imperial House.

[Alexander Zakatov, Imperial House]:
"The head of the Romanov Imperial House, the Grand Duchess Maria Vladimirovna, is very glad that finally law and justice have won. It's a pity it took such a long time but it finally proves that Russia is a state of law and that no political interest can interfere with the rule of law."

Previous courts had argued the royal family couldn't be considered victims of repression because they'd never been accused of a crime. That's now been overturned and a long legal battle by their descendants has finally come to an end - nine decades after their brutal massacre.
