  • Can someone tell me what piece plays at the intro of the video?

  • That's the final section of the last movement of Brahms' Symphony No. 2. The Symphony No. 1/Haydn Variations are commercially available now through Pentatone and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's website. Sooner than I expected!!

  • I have Janowski's "Ring Cycle" by Wagner on disc. It's straightforward, but it's still excellent.

  • Janowski is really honest in his interpretations, I think. Doesn't go over the top for effect, tends to stress a blend over a huge impact. These Brahms recordings (the 4 symphonies, and the Haydn Variations) will be coming out within a year or so.

  • Does it usually take THAT long to release a classical performance on CD?

  • The orchestra is making the CD's from live performances (a relatively inexpensive way of making orchestral recordings nowadays). The 3rd and 4th Symphonies and the Hungarian Dances are scheduled next season, after that the full set should be out quickly. I'm not sure, but maybe the 1st, 2nd Symphonies and the Haydn Variations will come out in early '08 (we have a tour to Europe planned in late January/early February which might be coordinated with the release of those discs.
