Ammonium Dichromate is a somewhat compact orange solid that when heated decomposes into a green solid Chromium(III)Oxide( that appears to grow in size) along with nitrogen and stream. You can see why this reaction is called a volcano reaction.

The reaction
(NH4)2Cr2O7 (s) → Cr2O3 (s) + N2 (g) + 4 H2O (g) (ΔH=−429.1 ± 3 kcal/mol)

  • is that a physical or chemical change and why?

  • use soda with mentos and see what happens

  • dweeb

  • @dawn871213 Sure, if you have a fume hood and the capability to handle it safely. The Ammonium Dichromate is carcinogenic. None of the by-products of decomposition are particularly harmful, though (Nitrogen, water, and Chromium(III) oxide).

  • uhh, enjoy cancer ;)

  • Is just fire and ammonium dichromate is enough? Wow I can teach my students with the volcano simulation XD.
