A year ago General Quarters and owner-trainer Tom McCarthy were among the favorite stories leading up the 2009 Kentucky Derby, with McCarthy becoming a media darling, as a former principal and schoolteacher from the Louisville area. Ultimately, there was little continuation of the story, with General Quarters running 10th in the Derby, followed by a ninth-place finish in the Preakness.
A year later on the 2010 Kentucky Derby undercard on Saturday, General Quarters regained the headlines for McCarthy, gamely winning the Grade 1, $553,100 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic in the race preceding the Derby.

It's very rare. But I love to see multi-dimensional horses like General Quarters who can race, and race well, over any track surface. That's the sign of a talented horse. Because Court Vision is certainly no easy beat on the turf. As a field full of European and Canadian turf horses just found out in the 2010 Woodbine Mile. He won this G1 race on turf. Won the G1 Toyota Bluegrass Stakes on poly-track at Keenland. And was 3rd to Blame on the dirt in the G1 Stephen Foster Handicap. Very talented.

I love that horse's story... great for the sport, and what heart General Quarters has! He's a big favorite of mine. So glad for his owner/trainer to get the win. :)
