Songfacts:

Rod Stewart composed and sang this ballad, which was sung from the point of view of an aging farmer husband. The song is a tribute to his loyal wife who stays by his side during a horrendous winter on the farm.Ray Jackson of the British folk/rock group Lindisfarne played the mandolin on this track. Stewart forgot Jackson's name and referred to him as "the mandolin player in Lindisfarne" on the sleeve credits. This was the only track on Every Picture Tells a Story, that Stewart composed by himself. He also penned the title track with Ronnie Wood.

From such a classic album as Every Picture, to sappy songs like Hot Legs. When I tell people I like Rod Stewart, I have to qualify my answer and say my admiration of him stopped at this album. I bought this as a new release when i was 13. Thx for the upload tho. great song.

I love that you can have this song, so sweet and folksy, on the same album with the hard driving "Every Picture Tells a Story". I remember going to Al Smith's Record Rack in South Bend and got them to play the first track from the album--bought it right on the spot. Too bad we don't get this broad range of great music anymore. Late 60's-early 70's was a magical time for music. thanks for the posting. I love this song!

Same with Elton John Madman Across the Water is a masterpeice and what did he follow it up with? Duck suits and Crocodile Rock. Amazing how fast both of them went down.

this was one of my fav songs in my youth,..still is..meant more after reading in my adulthood my GGGG grandfathers daily diary accounts of Dakota farming circa 1850s, getting lost in blizzards, etc. I liked reading the factoids..did not realize it was penned by Rod..makes it even sweeter..........I blame this album on my my undying love of acoustic string music. thot to look it up after cruising in my van playing it full blast on the cassette deck..;-) we had GREAT music, growing up!!!!!

Absolutely timeless. What better Rod album could there be than any of those in his "classic period" (pre-Atlantic Crossing)?
