Webster Groves had its first true test of the season on Friday night at St. Louis U. High. The Statesmen passed with flying colors in a 49-28 victory over the Junior Bills.

After winning its first two games (both at home) by an average of 37 points, Webster was playing its first road game of the season against a team that was ranked ninth in the Post-Dispatch large school rankings. The Statesmen withstood an inconsistent first half in improving to 3-0 heading into their bye week.

Senior quarterback Rayshawn Simmons had another turnover-free night, completing 17-of-34 passes for 275 yards and four touchdowns. He added 49 rushing yards and a score on seven carries.

Clinging to a 21-14 halftime lead, Webster came out and literally ran down the clock. The Statesmen rushed for 114 yards in the third quarter while keeping the ball for 8:41, extending the lead to 21 points. Webster finished with a season-high 204 yards on the ground.

The Statesmen defense harassed SLUH quarterback Trevor McDonagh into three interceptions, two of which came in the end zone. Webster also sacked McDonagh four times. Senior linebacker DJ Johnson had one of the interceptions to go along with a team-leading 11 tackles.

Senior receiver Mike Cole recorded the first 100-yard receiving day for Webster in 2011. He finished with 101 yards and a touchdown on four catches. Fellow senior AJ Farrar added a team-high 6 catches for 77 yards and a pair of scores. (By Nathan Young Statesmensports.com)
