A lot of people, including myself, have been asking lately, "How do I mix my personal and professional sides on my Facebook page?" You probably have a mix of family, friends, lovers, co-workers, and business colleagues as friends on your Facebook page. So the big concern is do you open yourself up so your friends can see all about your work life and all your clients and coworkers can see about your private life or do you keep them separate.

You definitely want to get yourself out there on the social networks whether its Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. And it's a lot easier to manage if you create one network. Award-winning videographer, Jessica Kizorek recommends, "You should merge all your different dimensions to create a holistic view of yourself. Open yourself up and let people see you as you are, but keep in mind that you should always show your best side."

You can post pictures of your visit with your family, but you don't want to post pictures of your last night out on the town where you partied too much and stayed out until 4 am. Give great tips and advice, but dont share off-color, crude jokes. Its all pretty simple, but heres a great rule of thumb: If you're thinking about posting something and youre not sure if all your friends will react positively to it, you probably shouldn't post it.

Now get out there and start networking!

P.S. I'd love to hear from you about your best tips and experience with using social networking. Do you use it to grow your business? Did you land a client on Facebook? Do you prefer Twitter over Facebook? What's your best way to use LinkedIn?

  • What a crock of crap! I don't go to my friends house and expect that ALL THEIR friends' friends are going to be sitting joining in the chat along with all of our respective business contacts. Facebook needs to sort this - either we are allowed to have multiple accounts (at least 2 anyway) or they provide a simpler means of separating professional/personal posts/photos etc.

  • But honestly... the problem is in the end if you "watch what you post" you'll really be limiting yourself. For example, if I want to talk about controversial issues like religion, politics, sexuality, etc. that may offend some people. Also, I am a type of person that has very strange tastes in everything: music, art, humor, movies, etc. At the same time I'm in "the corporate world." And now family is moving into Facebook as well. It's really frustrating...
