Mikhail Vasilyevich Nesterov (Russian: Михаи́л Васи́льевич Не́стеров) (May 31 [O.S. May 19] 1862, Ufa - October 18, 1942, Moscow) was a leading representative of religious Symbolism in Russian art. He studied under Pavel Tchistyakov at the Imperial Academy of Arts, but later allied himself with the group of artists known as the Peredvizhniki. His canvas The Vision of the Youth Bartholomew (1890-91), depicting the conversion of Sergii Radonezhsky, is often considered to mark the inauguration of the Russian Symbolist movement. From 1890 to 1910, Nesterov lived in Kiev and St Petersburg, working on frescoes in St. Vladimir's Cathedral and the Church on Spilt Blood, respectively. After 1910, he spent the remainder of his life in Moscow, working in the Marfo-Mariinsky Convent. As a devout Orthodox Christian, he did not accept the Bolshevik Revolution but remained in Russia until his death, painting the portraits of Ivan Ilyin, Ivan Pavlov, Otto Schmidt, and Vera Mukhina, among others.

  • sheer beauty

  • @stmatt13 I'm sorry to hear from yet another narrow-minded bible fanatic. I used to be orthodox Christian. Nothing in the bible could be further from the truth- it is intolerant, teaches people to suffer, prohibits awareness, and kills other religions. Much like Islam too, only they were nicer. And moron, you don't know anything about slavic history. The Church was the same mechanism in our country as Communism, it enslaved the people in the same way. Go learn something before you talk.

  • @RussianStarchild And yet most of the pictures are of Christ, Pilgrims or other religious themes. Communism could never stamp out the Church no matter how hard it tried. And neither can your pagan nonsense.

  • @GoatDaddyVersion2 The Church is not the heart and soul of Russia- the true heart and soul is buried with our myths, folklore and gods. ;) take it from a girl who is trying to unearth her history.

  • Спасибо за Ваш труд! Потрясающе.....

  • @vereiana Спасибо большое!!!

  • the music sounds like lisa gerrard.

    amazing paintings!

  • More than religious , Nesterov was a spiritual person. I feel in this video that he does not care to convert but to express hope, expectation for inner peace . And this music could not have been born elsewhere than Poland, I am conviced. I enjoyed the video a lot. All the best.
