This is just a brief glimpse of new-build 60163 Tornado on the outward leg of her night-time light engine test run (York - Scarborough and return) trundling through Malton Station on Tuesday 4th November 2008.
She had stopped just round the corner (out of sight) from the station for a check around to see all was well. Then trundled quietly through the station before gently opening up. I've let the video run on at the end to hear her quietly accelerating away and hear a short whistle. Oh yes, it rained again!
Not much of a video but at least we've seen her.

  • Great video,5* Just let you know that A1 Trust is looking for video footage of Tornado`s test run for archive purposes. EMuksteam

  • Thanks "EM". I noticed in Steam Railway that they were after footage. I'll offer it to them and see if they're interested. Chris

  • Great British engineering at its best.

shame about the choice of colour (it looks like it is still in primer) hope it is changed soon

  • Great to see we can still do something (even if the boiler was made in Germany). She's seen here in "photographic grey" - a tradition for new builds as the grey shows up everything for the "official" black and white photos that were always taken in "the old days". I understand that she is being painted in the break between her test runs (now completed) and her first revenue earning trip at the end of January 2009. Not long to wait. Chris

  • Thanks for posting this, Chris. Another excellent night time shot. 5* Do you know when this engine will be in main line steam (the funds allowing)?

  • Thanks - as remarked elsewhere a little bit of history. So far as I am aware the current provisional proposals are for two private charters from York to Newcastle on 31st January and 1st February next year (presuambly for covenanters). Provisionally followed by "The Talisman" York to Kings Cross on 7th Feb and then two Valentine Dining Excursions (lunch tour then dinner tour) for Steam Dreams on 14th Feb. Guess those are all subject to change. Chris

  • Thanks again. If I can get to see her it will be exciting to see. The tours will be subject to change (as always) but it will be fully booked up no doubt. I'm sure it be will cos those guys who built her deserve it to be!!

  • Marvelous. A great achievement by the A1 Trust. May their example inspire more new steam construction, not only in Britain but also on the west side of the Atlantic!

  • I couldn't agree more. A well proportioned loco that really looks the business. Well done A1 SLT. Chris

  • wow thats an inpressive locomtive
