http://lisagloria.com Part 2, "EO, Seated" Oil painting demonstration of realistic figure painting technique step by step. Original music by The Kevin Trudo : http://thekevintrudo.bandcamp.com Go download the music!

In this part of the technique, known as an underpainting or "bistre," the general value map of the painting is laid out. Details are kept to a minimum but the feeling of volume and lightfall is important. The pigments are burnt sienna + ultramarine blue with a small amount of OMS.

  • Lisa Glora, your work is gorgeous. As a semi-novice painter myself, I'm interested in learning how you achieve such thin, almost water-color consistency with oils & a little OMG. My paints seem super thick much of the time and, knowing the risks of using too much OMG, when I use a little it doesn't really get as thin as you're able to get. Thanks for any thoughts!

  • @MakePieceDC Well, it might be the brand of paint. Sometimes paint out of the tube is too rigid to work with, and I would avoid those tubes for underlayers. You might try painting a passage that seems too thick, then wiping it back with a paper towel. i work on linen adhered to panel to minimize the flexion of the linen, and so I'm not worried about thinned paint in underlayers at all.

  • @LisaGloriaArt Ah, good idea re varying brands. And re panels. What brand(s) do you like?

  • @MakePieceDC I like both New Traditions and SIgnature panels on Gatorfoam. I use the smooth Claessens double oil primed.

  • thank you LG
