I was there, filmed most of it. That's me in the yellow joker shirt at 3:05.. I broke off at queen's park, then east on Wellesley then down yonge to catch the group as they came back to get a nice shot to cap it off.. Great job everyone!! All my vids are up on my channel
in fact as we rode home some of the bikes including my oldie started to whine and moan. our bikes had a good riding that day, which is the equivalent of a week's worth of riding for me to and from work. ill never forget the local businesses and people standing outside of their homes cheering us on.
there was always one cyclist who dismounted to block cars at intersections to ensure we could all ride through. i will never forget all those who did the peace sign as we rode through the streets and the people who peaced back to us. when your chain falls loose, there's always another cyclist to help you put it back on. i saw no suped up bikes in the rally, except cop bikes of course. im suprised all the people riding their rattle-snake used bikes could make such an impact.
while all the demonstrating was happening at the front of the detention centre, the mood at the back was slightly different. some people were panicking and talking about how to get back home. one thing i learned about cyclists is that they are the MOST united and peaceful group ever. by riding as a group we kept each other safe.
i was not prepared to ride away all by myself right into the riot squad and have to present my ID and be arrested. luckily, the bike leader organized for some of the cyclists to ride away peacefully and i took that opportunity to dash. i commend ALLthe brave and passionate cyclers remaining behind to rally for detainees to be freed. it was the scariest thing of all to ride past those officers. as we were riding home i had convos with other riders and the sentiment was shock, disgust.
the third scary moment was when the police brigade had formed behind us at the detention centre. the crowd sitting in front where doing their thing, while nobody was noticing the buses of police unloading at the end of the street. at that time, i was beginning to feel really chicken. i thought they would start marching down the street doing their stomp stomp stomp thing and i was not about to run away and abandon my bike ... must protect bike at all costs! i dont know what a bike riot, thankfully
the second scary part was when we simply evaded the blocking officers by racing through the park. its hard to peddle through grass, and i was just trying to make it to the little concrete pathway, when 10 cops raced past me through the park with their muscular chicken-thigh legs. when police officers ride fast on bikes it scares me. i was afraid that by the time they reached the other end of the park i would be facing another bike blockade, while the others had already rode away on the street.
Best group of the weekend!! :)
