The Hidalgo County Commissioners are appointing an interim judge to preside over the newly created County Court at Law #7. A new judge will be elected and will be sworn in January, 2013. Judge Yanez comes to this court with years of experience as a Justice on the 13th Court of Appeals. In her entire tenure on this court, none of her rulings were overturned. She has also been a professor at Harvard University and was even under consideration to an appointment for the US Supreme Court when Sonia Sotomayor was appointment. Hidalgo County would be honored to have such a distinguished judge sit on this seat for the 16 months until the new judge is sworn in. However, it has become very political on the Comm. Court. At the last meeting, Comm. Joe Flores and Comm. Joseph Palacios did not vote for Linda. Judge Ramon Garcia and Comm Tito Flores did vote for Judge Linda and Comm. Joel Quintanilla, the tie breaker - was not in attendance. Comm. Quintanilla has met with Judge Linda on three ocassions and gave his total support to her appointment. He also met with a small committee of women (including myself) for over an hour and expressed his overwhelming and unconditional support for Judge Yanez, recognizing her vast experience and her ability to take the bench and get the court up and running immediately- without a learning curve. This is the type of person for a new court when it is only interim. Judge Yanez has been a role model of distinguished service and of dedication to fairness and the law as an Appellant Jusitice. Hidalgo County would be lucky to have her knowledge and skills on this new court.
