@balerick48 Really? Could you provide links to the documents or sources that discuss them in detail? I'm very curious to learn more as I'd not heard the theory that strategic bombing was actually strategic baiting.

Declassified documents show that by early 1944 Army Air Corps losses were so heavy that it was decided the bombing runs would be used strategically as bait to draw the Luftwaffe into the sky so it could be destroyed by fighter escort. That strategic objective succeeded. By June, 1944 D-day the Luftwaffe was not a factor. The US and British Air Forces had accomplished nearly complete air superiority by that time. Sad that the B-17, B-24 and other bomber crews did not know they were expendable
