When 36-year-old Jessica discovered a lump in her breast, "didn't want to get overly excited" -- until she had a dream that she had breast cancer. It was a dream she didn't want to come true, especially when she'd rather be celebrating her son's last day in kindergarten. A friend recommended Life with Cancer®, part of Inova Health System's Cancer Services program, which helped her find "a good perspective" -- and hope.
These support services are just some of the many community benefits offered at the program's Dewberry Family Center, a 16,000-square-foot facility dedicated to education, outreach and support of cancer patients, survivors and family members throughout the region, at no additional cost, regardless of where patients are treated for their disease.
The only health system-affiliated resource center of its kind in Northern Virginia, the house offers a medical library focusing on cancer, eight private and group counseling rooms, children's and adult art-therapy studios, a large exercise room for classes specifically designed for cancer patients, and a "reflection garden" to help patients and family members with coping and comfort. The Center was funded by generous philanthropic donations from patients, their loved ones and community members.
