  • Are you kidding me--racist and denigrating? I challenge you to find a mainstream white film from 1935 that has such a prominent role for African Americans. The Marx Brothers had well known sympathetic leanings toward minority groups. Not to mention that, as Jews, the Marx brothers probably felt the sting of discrimination themselves. Other than African Americans, Jews experienced more discrimination in this country than any other group.

  • @Joujoooux

Well spotted - and featured several other members of Duke Ellington's Orchestra. I think the boys were brilliant comediams. Their routines were pure Vaudeville and they were around long enough to know what was good and what worked. Kept in the context and spirit of the movie, it shouldnt offend anyone. (No more than James Brown offended people as the preacher in The Blues Brothers). It's comedy - relax!

  • les ha jodido el polvo a la pareja de blanquitos que estaba en el granero

  • I'm pretty sure it was Harpo that brought on the Duke Ellington Band and thank goodness Ivie Anderson. It's so hard to find any of her music.

  • @hovanti - to quote Fats Waller "This Joint is Jumpin!"

  • Only an ignorant and innately racist person would find this scene to be denigrating. It is your belief in your role as the benevolent protector that is racist and demeaning. This is a national treasure that should be held up as one of the crowning achievements for Marx Bros movies. It is also a proud moment when some of the most amazing music & dance ever performed by EXTREMELY talented people was available for all of America to see (whether the performers were Black, Jewish, or ?) .

  • Perhaps the last great Marx Brothers movie; probably because Thalberg had hand in it before his untimely death. My favorite film of theirs and this is one of the highlights. Thanks for posting it! (PS: The movie came out in 1937).

  • One of my fav sequences in all of the Marx brothers films. So beautiful, they're so talented! I want to swing dance!

  • I like how the house is shaking at 1:50; now THAT'S swinging!

  • @ThwartedVillainy yeah i know. its sad though...people considered this racist that i know

  • @CharlieChaplinsAngel He'd get arrested if he tried that these days.
