I always love your recipies. I have learned so much from you. Since I am not from indian origin I don't know so much about indian cooking. My question is what is the reason that one does not cook the lentils together with all the ingirdients like onion, spices... ?
Thank you for the response! I bought the ingredients today, and am excited to try you recipe..but if I do not have a pressure cooker, do you have any suggestions on how long I cook the lentils in a regular pan?

@0Expedition0 : Sorry for the late response, Think the lentils will take about 1-1.5 hours to cook. You will have to keep and eye on it and may have to add additional water as there is more evaporation.

Hi!
Those lentils look a little darker raw than your average brown lentils...does yours have a specific name? What heat do I use if I am cooking without a pressure cooker?

@0Expedition0 : Well, they are called Lentils - no other name in English that we know of....
:)

the only ingredient i cant find is asafoetida what is this please?

@midcitygym : Beans and legumes tend to cause flatulence and Asafoetoda (hing), helps with that. It is available at Indian grocery stores. If you can't find it, skip it - flavor-wise it's very minor .
