I get asked this question quite often by people just starting the diet and usually their comments go like I can't wait until I get this weight and start eating real food again. Usually I try to educate them about the maintenance phase of Atkins, and that Induction is not the only part of the Diet. Or they really rediscover they hate Atkins because it requires them to care about what they are eating, cook their food, or other things have taken precedence in their life.

There are a few times in which it might be advisable to stop a ketogenic diet for one that more relaxed. For example, it is generally advisable that during one's pregnancy that one stop's at least following the Induction phase of Atkins. Another scenario where I could not fault one getting off Atkins would be a military deployment scenario. While I was able to stay on the diet while attending military school for 6 weeks, I was not deployed to field required to eat MRE's every day. If you aren't in control of your menu choices, then the option becomes doing the best with what options you do have.

The most important part of the video is to be patient in getting off Atkins and to remember the lessons you learned while on it. If you rebel and start binging on sugar or flour, you will regain the weight. If you take at least a carb conscious approach to getting off and recognize the benefits of appetite suppression are not gone, you may be able to maintain most of the weight loss you started on Atkins.

  • Hello, this is Katrina again.

I am just wondering whether I can spend just a week in phase 2, 3 and 4 (one week for each phase) without gaining weight back? Keeping in mind that by phase 2 I would have lost the weight I needed (stayed on induction for 2 weeks - didn't have much weight to lose). Thanks!

  • @TheMissKatrinaxxx It may be difficult to find your exact CCLL and ACE with only a week in either, but if you are within 5 pounds of goals, that is essentially the only plan left. Mind you phase 4 is the rest of your life phase. Check out my Maintenance (Phase 4) -- how to prove everyone wrong video for more info.

  • Let's see, how do I get off Atkins without gaining the weight back? Bwahahaha..SELF CONTROL and a hell of a lot of SELF CONTROL..Or, glide straight into OWL. People, it's true think Induction is FOREVER. I don't know how many times I had to explain to folks and family it's for Fourteen days; much better than grapefruit and brown rice for three months aye? Keep up the good work Ken, and what's your last name again? ..heee

  • @cherilynmonroe :-) People take such a short sighted view of what Atkins is. If I could change one thing is that they would realize this before starting what would be just another in a string of fad diets, but I can't harp too much as the first time I started I had no clue either.

  • i was fortunate when i was deployed because i was able to be on atkins using the dfac. it made the difference.

  • @em23 Yeah I was foruntate to when I was active for only 6 weeks, eating at the DFAC was no problem for me either at Fort McCoy. Sure some breakfasts they failed to put out any meat options, but usually lunches/dinners usually had some hamburgers or hot dog options. I could imagine though 28 days in the field with only MREs would be near impossible, and frankly I might have had other concerns at that point.

    Where were you deployed?

  • Really great vid Kent. I have found this the easiest plan to follow. For the fact that it has lowered my blood pressure it keeps me going. I do add some cheat days though..but really nothing over the top. I have lost 24lbs ..been on this 4 months. I do wish it was more...but I will take it for now.

  • Thanks for sharing these tips. Very helpful because this seems like a subject which no one would want to talk about. By bringing it out in the open and doing a video on it, the dialog and thinking process for people can begin.

  • @bowulf I miss Dr. Atkins.

  • @bowulf pm sent :)

  • Your still such an inspiration to me :) especially since you've been on atkins sooo long and helping us with your recipe videos :) thanx
