The Belgian city of Bruges held its annual ice sculpture festival with traditionally spectacular results.
Up to 20 ice carvers have been involved in the project and each artist uses different sculpting tools ranging from chain saws, drills and angle grinders to the finer and smaller chisels, sharpened spades and even machetes.
The ice is produced by vaporising liquid nitrogen and water which produces perfect snow crystals. These are then blown into layers inside a wooden frame and compacted. Three days later the hardened ice, in the form of a block, is then ready for carving.
