Have an internet connection? Then you have a window into the ocean right on your computer screen. Researchers at the University of Victoria have established underwater laboratories in Saanich Inlet and the Strait of Georgia. This groundbreaking project is called VENUS (Victoria Experimental Network Under the Sea). Fibre optic cables located 100 to 300 metres below the oceans surface constantly relay data and images to shore. Scientists have already made new discoveries using data from VENUS. To access the website, you can search for VENUS uvic on the internet. Part of the Vancouver Aquariums Environmental News series.
