Sita narrates to Kush & Luv, upon their inquiry, an occasion when Shiva did get enraged - the occasion being Sati's sacrifice @ Daksha's yagna.

As the story goes, Daksha held a grand yagna w/o inviting Shiva and Sati to slight Shiva. Sati tries to get Shiva to come with her, but he declines. So Sati goes to the yagna herself and demands to know from her father why Shiva wasn't invited. Daksha responds that the yagna was only for the devas, and he has no relationship remaining with Shiva. Sati gets furious at this and enters the yagna fire itself, thereby disrupting the yagna.

Sita then narrates to them how Shiva created Virbhadra to destroy Daksha's yagna and kill him, while dancing the terrifying tandava dance. Later, Shiva relents and allows Daksha to be restored to life and complete his yagna, despite having lost Sati.

  • @zeeranyah Its not about whether its true or mythical, its about learning good from these, that is what is important.

  • The story you narrated above is a version believed by a certain section of the population, particularly in the North East (and among Bangladesh Hindus). In the original, Sati incinerated herself, not in the yagna fire but in a yogic fire that she herself created. When Shiva heard this news, he sent Virbhadra and Mahakali to wreck Daksha's yagna and kill him. After Daksha was later revived at the behest of Brahma & Vishnu, he was allowed to complete his yagna.

  • thank you, Vrishasena

  • Also, in the first 3 yugas, who do you know committed sati? Nobody in the Raghukul did - Kaushalya, Kaikeyi & Sumitra all lived in Ayodhya long after Dasharath. In the Mahabharat, Madri committed self-immolation holding herself responsible for Pandu's death, but in the Kuru/Pandava family itself, Satyavati, Ambika, Ambalika and later Uttara all survived their hubbies. If it was such an ancient practice, how come nobody - including several devoted wives of various rulers, rishis & so on - did?

  • @sanghiraghav

Harshavardhan's sister was a widow, but after he saved her, she lived w/ him, due to the fact.

Sita didn't commit sati - where did you get that idea? In Valmiki, Rama told her that he couldn't accept a woman who had been in another's place for so long, and she tok the fire test to prove her innocence. It was controversial, granted, but it was definitely not sati.

  • @Vrishasena PLEASE DO NOT BLAME THE MUSLIM INVASION! How do you know that it started after Harshvardhan's reign? It has been a practice since the very beginning in our culture, which is still going on in some remote areas of this great land. You talk about Dwapar and Treta yug. What about Sita? According to the mythology, she had to jump inside fire (that shows how the society viewed women back then). I think people should take such stories in our sacred texts as moral stories.

  • @sanghiraghav

I agree w/ maniacjd - the practice of Sati did NOT start from this. In the Treta Yuga as well as the Dwapar Yuga, Sati was not practiced, and as late as Harshavardhan, the practice was very rare. It only started being practiced in medeaval India, after the Muslim invasions

  • @maniacjd ...I agree maa sati has made a huge sacrifice for her husband. But it led to the birth of the sati practice in India in the name of sacrifice. Thats why I hate it.

  • @sanghiraghav ..Boss no one told anyone to kill the women like sati. Its not the ridiculous chapter. Think of the side when a wife kills herself coz of her husband's insult from her own father. Where else everyone killed poor women in India juz coz of illiteracy. They were educated but Jerks. Dont compare the Sati Pratice with Maa Sati and her sacrifice.

  • @Apollo13143 thx for ur concern and ur post. dhanyavad
