I was watching this footage of the 1982 American Honda float when I noticed my dad. He is now retired but he was one of the Honda engineers pulling on the tow rope. He recalled that it rained the night before and a combination of flowers getting on the rails and possible centrifugal forces (when rounding the corner of Colorado Blvd.) were to blame in stopping the lead car at the top of the track. The float designer decided to incorporate a tow rope in the design. Good thing.
