one more thing!...it took 56 years for me to hear this tonight! it kind of took the wind out of my sails for keith emerson. this guy is even hitting the organ to get that reverb spring sound! i always knew keith was great because he practiced. now ,i know he is only human. of course.
forgot to mention lee michaels!...since i was a teenager, i give keith awesome credit for the moog!...but seems like everything else was lifted by what i am listening to.
i am very surprised...kind of shocked as i listen to this! i had always thought that keith emerson was an original...till now! this sounds not only like the nice, but some riffs seem to be taken from this guy even into early ELP! ive been playing jazz piano and composing for many years! i have ears to hear when i was a teenager from brian auger, to mccoy tyner, jimmy smith, herbie, chick...you know the drill! i still cannot believe what i have just heard! till tonight!
Shinn is a very important figure in the history of progressive rock who slipped through the cracks and is virtually unknown, despite the fact that Keith Emerson has openly acknowledged him as a major influence. It is also clear that Vincent Crane was a big fan. This recording virtually rewrites the history of progressive rock organ, and forges the template from which Emerson, Crane and others molded their musical identities years later. And yet Shinn was content to remain anonymous....
Bloody 'ell, this guy is great. Keith Emerson spoke very highly of Don Shinn in his autobiography, and at last I know why. This sounds exactly like what the Hammond was built for!
