I just bought my first stand alone Blu-ray player here in Japan in December 2011. I had been using a friend's PS3 before that.

I haven't bought many BRs (BDs?) yet, but my collection is off to a good start. I recommend a few titles, and if you have any must-haves to recommend to me, please leave a comment below.

  • I don't have a Blue Ray player.. I really don't own a lot of movies. I spend my money on outdoor gear. I want to get a few movies..but most likely I'll be getting DVDs for now.

    Down the road? Who knows?

  • @markshmily I didn't rush to change over either. But I have to admit, with a bigger TV like my new one, and with movies like Star Wars or Tron, my Blu rays look Amazing!!!

  • I agree that some movies "need" Blu-Ray more than others. I think it's worthwhile for movies with lots of action or special effects like the Star Wars movies or The Dark Knight, but it'd be wasted on something like The King's Speech.

  • @ThatOtherTom i agree to an extent - which is why I still buy most of my TV box sets on regular DVD or thru iTunes.

  • I need indiana jones on blu-ray. Blade Runner is the best blu-ray I have. I start drooling at the opening credits and am swimming by the end.

  • @NikkeinJapan yeah - I want to pick up Blade Runner. Is Indy on BR? If so, will have to add that to the list as well.

  • Awesome collection! I recomend you check out the Blu Ray release of Star Wars The Clone Wars season 1-3 and Robot chicken Star Wars episode 3. They are pretty amazing!

  • @TaishaJason i remember you telling about the parents :) i will definitely look into downtown abbey now!! the last birtish drama i saw was emma (bbc, 2009) with a fantastic cast, such good soundtrack, and smart dialog -- maybe you'll like it if you happen to see it. i LOVED it!

  • In the states, we also use BD when referring to Blu-Ray disks.

  • @Seraphical My parents are from England, so I've always had a soft spot for British dramas. And this one is superb! Great acting, fantastic dialog, good plot, great characters - it all equals compulsive viewing!

  • jason,

i was wondering why do you like downtown abbey? perhaps i could look into it

  • @106460 haha - yes, that was a typo - a mistake I made. Thanks for telling me. :)
