To begin the underwater pull series:

The final phase of the pull is the release, when the hand moves from 9 o?clock back to 12 o?clock, precisely where it started this .85-second underwater, almost circular, journey. Since the hand/arm are now moving in the forward direction again, the objective of this phase is to slip the hand and arm out of the water with the least amount of frontal drag possible

  • Excellent videos with competent narration, scientific principles in popular language. I realize EVF and rotation are over exaggerated lately but what is your view of high elbow during recovery? Your arms seem kind of straight during recovery (like those of many elite swimmers) while many schools in their instructions insist that the wrist must travel below the elbow almost touching the water (feels awkward). Could this detail affect speed in sprints?

  • @ijelev68 From a physics standpoint, the further the center of mass is away from the fulcrum (the shoulder joint) the more energy will be transferred to the body once the arm decelerates when it enters the water. From a biomechanical standpoint, the straight arm recovery with the shoulders rotated vertically is the most relaxed position the arm can be in. Not everyone likes or can do straight arm recovery, but nearly all great swimmers are vertical from the elbow to the shoulder. Hope this helps
