Part 1 of 7:
At about 8:30AM, the power in most of central Auckland was suddenly cut off, due to a combination of unusually strong winds and a faulty component in the power grid.
This video was taken a few minutes later, as Balmoral 611 cautiously negotiates one of 300+ blacked-out intersections, part of the first wave of fire appliances responding to the CBD.

That same morning 1600km south, i was playing in the biggest snowstorm of the century. 12 June 2006 the power was off and the Timaru District was closed down.

I remember this day too. I lived in town on the corner of Wakefield and Queen St. Sirens all morning. I also have an interest in emergency services so it was great fun watching everything from the window.

@tebags Great day wasn't it! I got the morning off work of course, no computers and too dark inside. My fave clip was "Part 7", 205 at Queen and Mayoral, it was really bucketing down at that point!

Thanks man! CBD = Central Business District. Its just a fancy way of saying downtown!

I was lucky, I got the day off work! We couldn't do anything in the dark without power anyway. I just wandered around town in with my camera, hoping it wouldn't get ruined by the driving rain, and we both made it back alive!
