A five days long Training Workshop for Community e-Centers Managers from 5 districts in Bangladesh was launched on 19 July 2009 at Bangladesh Computer Council by the State Minister for Science and ICT Architect Yeafesh Osman. Through the training the CeC Managers will gain in-depth knowledge and learn skills in management and operation of community e centers. The training is a part of the project titled Empowering the Rural Areas through Community e-Center implemented by the Ministry of Science and Information & Communication Technology (MoSICT) in Bangladesh, in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP).
The Project aims to reduce poverty, empower communities, and improve the quality of life by increasing ICT connectivity and accessibility in rural areas by developing a sustainable CeC model according to the type of communities covered by the Project and their needs. Five CeCs have been established in Akhura in Brahmanbaria District, Bajitpur in Kishoreganj district, Taraganj in Rangpur District, Rampal in Bagerhat District and Jamalganj in Sunamganj. The benefits of ICT and the impact of CeCs on the socioeconomic development of the communities will be demonstrated and analyzed through pilot CeCs.
Speakers at the inauguration session stressed on the importance of running the community e Centers with a proper sustainability plan and on using the e Centers in new and innovative ways. By providing access to the Internet, the e-Center can facilitate lives and business and even provide useful information on health, education and agriculture related issues. Community members should be aware of the services provided by the CeCs. said Mr. A.K.M Abdul Awal Mazumder , Secretary, MoSICT ,who was present as Special Guest at the inauguration session.
The State Minister for Science and ICT emphasized on the fact that the people living in rural areas can also avail valuable government services through the technologies available at the Community e Centers. We are trying to ensure ICT access to the rural farmers, so they would be able to exchange information regarding demand and sales, weather updates and potential markets for their produce through the internet, he added. He encouraged the relevant government agencies and non government organizations to come forward to increase ICT services for the nation and to educate the young generation in using ICT. A creative and ICT-educated young generation can change the country's financial landscape, as they will help develop software and information systems to support the country's farm sector said Osman. Representatives from various stakeholders /organizations , such as Science and ICT Secretary AKM Abdul Awal Mazumder, head of the Project Implementation Unit and Joint Secretary, Mr. M M Neazuddin, Mr. Abdul Matin, Senior Assistant Chief and Deputy Director of Bangladesh Computer Council Mohammad Zabed Ali Sorker also spoke at the ceremony.
The organizers of the program look forward to the successful operation of the venture which will take the nation one step closer to achieving the dream of having a technologically advanced and independent nation, a Digital Bangladesh.
