On May 17, 1989, two hunters were visiting the Fort McMurray area from Norway on a bear hunting trip. The pair went in opposite directions to seek out hunting locations. After approximately 30 minutes the partner heard gunshots. He returned to the victim's location to find him deceased as a result of gunshot wounds. The victims name was Even Skojlas, a 63 year old white male. This incident occurred 27 km south of Mariana Lake on Highway 63.
