August 24, 2011. About 4:27 PM. Salt Spring Island, BC.
There I was, sitting on a rock, happily watching nothing happen from campsite #25 at Ruckle Provincial Park on Salt Spring Island—thinking of going snorkelling—when a guy walking by the nearby tide pools started making a wave sign.
He wasn't waving hello. He was waving his hands in an up and down flopping motion. So naturally I yelled, "Huh?!" and he pointed out at the water and said, "Whales. Couple a whales."
I ran for my camera, and this is the rest of what I saw. At least two orcas, swimming northwest of Salt Spring Island.
Seen any whales*? Report them, here: wildwhales.org/sightings/mysightings.php
*Technically, orcas are dolphins.
