As the human species continues to evolve away from our evolutionary reptile mind, there will naturally be holdouts, throwbacks, & Republicans. The hard part about being on the cutting edge, where empathy & inclusion hold sway, is dealing with the neanderthals (no offense to neanderthals) who lack the wisdom & will to grow beyond myopic, dichotomous, deficit-model dysfunction. We must draw healthy boundaries against their negativity, but continue to reach out, one person at a time.
I'm afraid that there are a lot of people who think like this, no matter how educated they are. That is, they are subtly (or not so subtly) prejudiced against anyone who is not White!!! I've seen it and heard it, and I am furious about it. It is more common among older people, I believe.

I am not sure that the division in this country has had a clear point of focus.

Very interesting discourse. I would like for more Americans to start thinking about how these issues affect their daily lives and decision making.
