The Bible-belt reacted so strongly against Lennon because they didn't like being called bad Christians. I don't even know if they were conscious of this fact, but their reaction was so over the top, that there had to be some unconscious guilt that manifested in anger against Lennon and the Beatles. And, right-wing demagogues used it for their own purposes, whipping up anti-Beatle hysteria. The KKK even threatened them. No wonder they stopped touring.
