anything by Karen Pryor, my favorite is Don't Shoot the Dog but I heard she came out with a new one.

is the clicker a good tool to use because some other people i asked said the clicker can be a distraction when training your dog; they all said that a mark word would work much better

I don't know why a word would be any less distracting then a click. But to answer your question, it is an amazing tool. Animal trainers of all different species use clickers or whistles to get behaviors. It is scientifically proven to work. Read don't shoot the dog by Karen Pryor to get more information! :)
