Luthier Otis Tomas has been living in Cape Breton for over thirty years. During this time he has built over a few hundred instruments guitars, mandolins, harps, cellos, violas and violins. As a tree spreads branches into the sky, this luthier has seen his work branch around the world throughout the United States, Scotland, Ireland, Denmark and even Japan. In 1997 Otis was awarded a Nova Scotia Arts Council grant to build a complete family of stringed instruments using a single maple tree that grew adjacent to his property in St. Ann's. The Fiddletree family of instruments includes violins, viola, cello, arch-top guitar, tenor guitar, mandolin, and harp. This concert will feature Otis Tomas, Paul Cranford and Paul MacDonald, along with Laoise Kelly from Ireland, Abby Newton from the US, Mairi Campbell and Sarah McFadyen from Scotland all playing instruments made by Otis. Sarah will bring home the fiddle Otis made for her last year and will be learning to make one while she's here. The musicians will also all play together in the Fiddletree Suite-music composed and arranged by Otis for the Fiddletree family of instruments. This concert is unique and close to our hearts as we share with you one of our great artists.

I had the pleasure of meeting Otis a couple of time at the Quebec Winter carnival and playing bodhran for him on Morrison's Jig. A great guy! His instruments are true works of art.
