Quake moves New Zealand closer to Australia

There won't be any cheaper air fares but southern New Zealand is now closer to Australia after last week's huge earthquake.

The quake was so powerful it pushed the South Island 30cm closer to Australia.

The island's east coast moved only 1cm Westwards.

This quake did it 'in a few seconds rather than waiting hundreds of years'.

While it brings eastern neighbour closer, there's still a 2250km gap between two countries.

The 7.8 magnitude quake, the biggest in New Zealand for 78 years, caused slight damage to buildings and property when it struck the remote

Fiordland region last Thursday.

A tsunami was generated but a tide gauge on the west coast recorded a wave of 1m.

A fast circulating email claims a Tsunami will occur in Asia in July which happens to be the date of the next Solar Eclipse. The problem is, Eclipses don't cause Tsunamis, Earthquakes do. And scientists haven't yet come up with a way to predict Earthquakes months in advance.

so whos making these guesses? nostradamus?? cuz solar eclipses don't trigger any tsunamiz.. maybe if the moon gets close enough, the gravitational pull might trigger larger tides but NOP no tsunami thur.

@21hdflat I dont believe in the 2012 crap one bit but I also dont believe in god, I do believe though that the only way the earth will be whiped out is by man itself. Unless a rock the size of the moon hits the earth, or bigger, we will all be okay.

@21hdflat Even the mayans didnt say the world was GOING TO END, They just said there will be a change soo it could be good/bad but you know the media. Will do anything to get people scared. And the mayans never finished the calendars because they were all killed.
