Are there universal "absolutes" in the realm of moral discussion and thought? Are there certain "things" that are unchanging and immutable when it come to morality?

There are no positive guidelines within morality that are without exception. Generosity is called for, but need not be practiced if it excludes things like your own well-being. In addition is is a very complex thing which cannot be untangled by experiment and affected by strong bias. There is almost always room for a better understanding.

Some things change based on prevailing custom and such as the side of the road we drive one.

Those morals related to prudence are especially likely to change in such a manner.

But I do believe there are some things with are so contrary to human ends that they can never be moral unless the species became some other creature entirely. These are withing the realm of justice. It is never properly human to act with the intent of taking a life. Self defense is OK, but must not progress to killing if the killing can be reasonably avoided in such a defense.

Animals don't suffer when they are killed to end up on our table.

They get a nail shot in their head or a strong electrical shock.

Why would it be immoral to bread humans and shoot them in the head to feed lions ?

I do think its better to leave lions and humans unarmed free in a big area and give them equal rights to survive.

I am joking, but it does put the moral issue in another perspective.

We reason on this side of the barrier knowing to be on the right side of the gun.
