I've read some of this guy's stuff, and he seems to know what he's talking about, but I think part of what is working here is the simple fact that "trying" to hit/kick the guy and failing is perfectly acceptable here - it's not her fault if she can't hit him, in fact it's expected. However, we tend to be a bit hesitant about hurting people without cause.
I would be interested to see the same thing with an angry gang member.
