This is a story John Larson, former NBC West Coast correspondent, did when he was at KOMO-TV in Seattle. For about 8 years, I played this video for the hundreds of students who took an introductory TV shooting and editing with me at Columbia Journalism School. Its masterful use of writing and timing (a trademark of Larson's) is surpassed by the way it shows the importance of audio in a video story. The rest of the semester, I'd keep saying, "Let me hear the Sweet & Low"... Once you see this, you'll know why. Even now, an alum will occasionally mention this piece and how he/she remembers "the Sweet & Low" while making videos.

  • I wish this video would play smoothly. It always seems to get stuck...

  • Hi, John Larson here -- good to know someone noticed. How do I get in touch with you? John.
