It was an interesting couple of days late in the season!

Beautiful views, and arguably my best flight ever!

  • Thunderf00t, if you haven't before, watch 127 hours. I think you need to see it.

  • Just off the top of my head, have you considered making some sort of modified fish net for catching it instead of crashing it? You know, you take 2 foldable metal rods, stick them into the ground, put a net between them and fly the plane into it? Kinda like a tennis court net, from the top of the rod right down to the ground, so you can have some maneuvering space. And it doesn't have to be too wide either. You could easily put a 3m x 5m net into a backpack or a small bag, so no problem there.

  • @christo930 at 8:39 there is spot on the rock that looks like a vulva!

You should start carrying a handheld GPS, they can help you retrace your steps.

  • @enigmas00 What is 127 hours?

  • Can I go with you on your next run?

  • @Maxdwolf

I never said you should fly the plane in the net. Prop stops fairly quickly.

For the net - 2 solutions:

    1) let it tip intentionally and grab the net

    2) reinforce the rods with nylon lines pinned to the ground (suspension bridge model)

That's if you're using plastic. Metal rods hammered into the ground and assembled would be tougher to tip/bend. 0.5m of the first section into the ground would be sufficient. Then you screw on the second 2 sections. (assuming the rod height is 3m; 3 x 1m)

  • Fantastic.

Amazing to think places like that exist in "our own backyard", so to speak :)

  • @mickeypopa Well the plane will tend to flip and it is quite likely the prop would come around. At least the footage I've seen is like that, iirc. Also the net has to give some in order for it not to do damage. With some light bracing plastic ought to be able to handle it, particularly with the net giving some. My main concern would be with making sure the whole structure doesn't tip when the plane hits.

  • @Maxdwolf

I guess it could be done with PVC, but the only problem is how would the plastic joints handle the stress.

And there's no danger of prop tangling in the net, because it's in the back of the plane. :)

Sure, you have to turn it off ultimately, but it can easily be done after you catch it.

  • @mickeypopa I was thinking something similar, but not metal rods. PVC or another kind of plastic would do fine. Gotta be careful to turn the engine off at the last minute to avoid tangling the prop though.

  • You have no ailerons, thunder baby. It will give you way better control in the wind. I build my own planes cause I'm so broke, i use a hot glue gun for ther car and some tooth picks and tape. LOL : ) good stuff, i kind of wish i was doing it.
