Catholic priest accused of child abuse

The Catholic priest who conducted the funeral of the Farquharson boys, murdered when their father drove their car into a dam, has been charged with child pornography and child sex offences.

Father John Haines, 61, who served for more than a decade in the rural St Joseph's parish, west of Geelong, resigned after being charged with possessing child pornography, transmitting child pornography and procuring a child for child pornography.

Colac detectives also charged him with indecent assault with a child under 16 and an indecent act with a child under 16.

Victoria Police said the alleged offences were believed to have taken place in the Geelong area since 2007.

Melbourne's Catholic Archbishop, Denis Hart, named Fr Haines in a prepared statement saying he had accepted the priest's resignation.

Fr Haines was instrumental in healing the community of Winchelsea, a town of about 1,000 people about 110km south-west of Melbourne, following the deaths of brothers Jai Farquharson, 10, Tyler, seven and Bailey, two.

The three died when a car driven by their father, Robert Farquharson, plunged into an icy dam beside the Princes Highway, just outside the town, as they returned from an outing on Father's Day, 2005.

Farquharson was subsequently convicted of their murders.

At their funeral, Fr Haines said the boys' place in heaven was assured.

"There aren't any words of comfort when one is faced with the deaths of children in such tragic circumstances," he told mourners.

"These ordinary little boys in this ordinary town have made so much difference to the lives of so many people."

Fr Haines had been placed on administrative leave and his faculties to operate as a priest withdrawn, the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne said.

"I am deeply troubled by the laying of charges and concerned for all persons involved," Archbishop Hart said.

"I wish to assure parishioners and the local community of my support and concern for them at this time."

Archbishop Hart said Fr Haines was entitled to the presumption of innocence.

"As the matter is now in the hands of the Victoria Police it is not appropriate for me to make any further comment," Archbishop Hart said.

The parish Fr Haines has vacated covers the towns of Meredith, Winchelsea, Anakie, Bannockburn, Elaine, Inverleigh and Lethbridge.

Police executed a search warrant after a community member made a complaint to Colac police.

Fr Haines was bailed to appear in the Geelong Magistrates' Court on May 29.

By the same logic, in 1933 the Nazi party polled 43.9% of the German vote; therefore 43.9% of Germans support the Nazis; therefore 43.9% of 82 million people = 35.9million Germans support the Nazis. Flawed logic - of course! So is yours. Would any sane person make that claim - no! Your "statistics" refer to previous offenders - there is no likelihood at all that any percentage of clergy attending will be 'sex offenders.'

These convicted predators are no longer in jail. So .. are you sure there "is no likelihood at all" that some will attend WYD08 events? And how about the thousands of INT'L clerical sex offenders, who have served their time, or never got convicted? Noone is stopping them attending.

I hope that this doesnt put people off going to church in search of Jesus. Yes it is a bad thing, and it needs to be exposed. I just hope that all christian leaders dont fall under that awful cloud of distrust, because of the acts of those who couldnt control their sin.

If any of you Sydney people see this, just be aware, by letting this religious congregation into your city, creating there own law and suppressing any right to protest against the hidious and crimminal acts of the catholic establishment over millenia. I've had enough of the church making excuses for - and trying to cover up - the crimes of these vile kid-fuckers. of course no sexual assault can go by unattended.. it has to be stopped but theres a catch: priest arent saints just for beings priests just like homeless people are filthy people for being homeless it simply has nothing to do one thing with the other. priests are men, men are sinners and make lots of errors, just because they are clergy it doenst make them a whole lot worse does it?
