Interesting to see Francis Bacon mentioned, he certainly is more interested in capturing something of the spirit and emotion rather than just slavish reproduction, as does Freud.
Both are hugely influential and certainly among maybe only five or six people in the world who have made me want to learn to paint and really to start from scratch.
Thanks for posting this*

I think there is no such thing as "just repruducting". Because you always have to make choices, when you simplify what you see.

I dont simply get Bacon of Freud. Jacob Collins, Odd Nerdrum, Burton Silverman and Harvey Dinnerstein are much more intresting to me :). They investigate more what they really see.

as the interview proceeds, he says "um" less, I am listening to this while I work and its really hard with his stuttering, but very interesting, have to listen to it more than once.

Could you imagine a discussion between Freud and John Cage?

Umm.....yes. Oh. Ah....uh, umm, of course.

lol. He does say "umm, uh" a lot. But, he is still an awesome painter, I agree.

I really admire his work - i'm just surprised at hearing him speak - i guess he is an introvert.
He doesn't have to say anything - the work does the talking.

yeah, freud incorporates a level a craftsmanship rarely seen today, but he is not doing what 19th century artists did. he is far from an academic painter. freud and bacon shared very similar views on representational art, that is, to put it bacon's way, "not simply illustration, but concentrations of reality".they are realists, they realize all we have is sensation. he paints sensations, wants the paint to have the same effects as skin.

why eliminate this subject matter when it's timeless?
